Malta: How “I Am What I Am” was selected as song for Eurovision 2022

This Monday was announced that “I Am What I Am” would be the new song of Emma Muscat as Maltese act in Turin. The song replaced to “Out of Sight”, with which Emma won the national selection, MESC 2022, on 19th February.

Despite the top score received from the jury and the televote in the final, “Out of Sight” hadn’t a warm reception in the International fans community. Because of this Maltese broadcaster decided to look for another song to compete at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.

Anders Fredslund-Hansen, producer and manager of The Arragement, has explained in a interview to the Danish broadcaster, DR, that after the national final Maltese national broadcaster, PBS, contacted with him to find that new song. It’s important to remember that The Arrangement has worked previously in “Only Teardrops”, winning song of the Eurovision Song Contest 2013.

The day after the Maltese selection, I received a text message from their Eurovision manager asking me for help. They had found a winner, but were looking for a new pile of songs that might surpass the one she had won with.

Then The Arragement submitted to PBS a number of songs with two of them being recorded as demos. Finally the broadcaster selected “I Am What I Am” as Maltese entry in Turin.

As has added Fredslund-Hansen, the selected song was created in a songwriting camp, last summer, organized by his company and submitted to the Melodifestivalen 2022 altought finally wasn’t selected.

The creative team of “I Am What I Am” is composed by Dino Medanhodzic, Stine Kinck and Julie Aagaard. Stine Kinck has participated in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2011 final as singer and Julie Aagaard was involved in the creation of “Run To The Hills” and “Let Me Go”, sixth place in Melodifestivalen 2022 and third in Dansk Melodi Grand Prix 2022, respectively. Finally Dino Medanhodzic was one of the composers of the Dotter‘s songs “Bulletproof” and “Litle Tot”, second place in Melodifestivalen 2020 and fourth place in Melodifestivalen 2021, respectively.
